Topaz
Topaz gets its name from an island in the Red Sea named Topazios.
Topazios is a Greek word meaning "to guess"; which suited the island
because it was often covered in fog and difficult to find. Topaz is the
most misused name in the gem world. It is given to citrine and smoky
quartz which are not Topaz. This is why we have "precious and
imperial topaz" to help distinguish the real topaz from the other
stones. Imperial originated from the discovery of pink topaz in
Russia. The gem instantly became popular with the Czar and only his family
or those he chose could own the "imperial topaz". Some pinkish
orange topaz is heat treated to produce a truer pink color.
