Sapphire
Sapphire is a corundum of any color but red, blue being the most
popular. Fancy Sapphire is the name given to colors other than blue.
Historically, Sapphire has been called many names. Sapphiros was the word
Romans used which meant lapis lazuli, green sapphires were called
"emeralds", blue Sapphires were called "hyacinths", and
purple Sapphires were called "amethysts". Australia, Sri Lanka,
and Thailand are now the current sources of sapphire. Kashmir, India
produced some of the most beautiful blue sapphires in its time, but little since
World War II. Sapphires are usually heated to produce or intensify color,
make color uniform, or to lighten stones. This is a permanent treatment
and is used to enhance Sapphire's beauty.
