Ruby
Ruby, the birthstone for July, is the red variety of
corundum. Ruby was called Ratnaraj, which means "king of gems"
by the ancient language of India, Sanskrit. Ruby was named because of its
red color. It was in the 1800's that Ruby was recognized as belonging to
the corundum family. Red spinel and Garnet were called Ruby also before
the 1800's. Ruby appears dull and greasy as a rough stone but when it is
cut Ruby can have the beauty of a diamond. The oldest ruby sources are
Burma and Sri Lanka. The leading source of Ruby today is Thailand; others
include Afghanistan, India, Kenya and Burma. Ruby is commonly heated to
improve the red color and the overall appearance.
