Peridot
The attraction of peridot rests in its colour, ideally a rich 'oily' green but
ranging from pale golden-green to brownish green. The Red Sea island
Zebirget (St. John's Island) was the source of peridot used by the ancient
Mediterranean civilisations and is still worked sporadically to produce some
of the finest peridot. The Greeks and Romans knew the island as Topazios
and called this green gem topaz; peridot is a French word, possibly derived
from the Arabic 'faridat', meaning gem. Today fine peridot is also mined
in Burma, Norway and Arizona.
