Emerald
Emerald is the most valuable member of the beryl family.
Emerald's were used by Nero as sunglasses to view the chariot races since it was
believed to soothe the eyes. The first known emerald mines were in
southern Egypt. The world's leading mines can be found in Columbia dating
back before the sixteenth century. Emeralds can also be found in Brazil,
Africa, Russia, Pakistan, and Zambia. Emeralds are commonly oiled to
improve their beautiful appearance. The finest color in emerald is an
intense medium-dark tone of green, blue green, or yellowish green. Even
though emeralds have a hardness of 7.5-8, when working with emeralds you must
avoid heat, temperature changes, steam cleaners, ultra-sonic and chemicals.
